To root or not are common questions asked by Android OS users. As common wisdom let us understand that things that have benefits also have detriments, so also rooting your Android phone or tablet. Although at times, benefits outweigh detriments and vice versa. This post is compiled to give Android users better understanding on whether to root their Android devices or not, the pros and cons have been listed to enable users make decisions on their own.

Should Android Device be Rooted or Not

What is Rooting?

Android rooting simply means the process of allowing users running Android OS on their smartphones, tablets and other devices to attain “superuser” rights and permissions i.e. “root access” within Android’s subsystem. In short, rooting means getting to the ‘root’ of the Android operating system, with the full privilege to make global changes.

Advantages of Rooting Your Android Device

Rooted Android device have numerous benefits which include:
  1. Custom Themes: the graphics that appear on your device are basically regarded to as themes. A rooted device will give its user the privilege to fully customize every graphic in their device. Custom themes can also be loaded on the device.
  2. Run Special Applications: A rooted android device gives user ability to use some special applications you cannot use on an unrooted device.
  3. No more ads: you can completely block advertisement on your rooted android device.
  4. You can create secure tunnels to the internet.
  5. You will be able to tether a computer to your Android device, even if it has been disabled by default. Tethering makes you use your phone’s data connection on your computer.
  6. You entire file system is at your finger tip, so you can access it at any time.
  7. Improve your device performance and extend it battery life: There are many custom ROM’s and apps available for rooted devices that will allow you to drastically improve the performance (speed) and also extend battery life on your device.
  8. Infinite Features: beyond just customizing your phone's existing features, rooting helps you pile on all kinds of wonderful new weirdness. You'll love it.

Don't Miss:

Disadvantages of Rooting

Below are the three main disadvantages of rooting your Android devices:
  1. Security Risks: rooting your Android devices may cause some security risks, since rooting may create security vulnerability. For instance, Google refuses to support the Google Wallet service for rooted devices.
  2. Voiding your warranty: some carriers and hardware manufacturers will void your warranty because of rooting your device. Although you can also unroot your device if there is any need to send it back for repair. To unroot your android device, you only need to flash the original backup ROM you made and no one will ever know that it was rooted.
  3. Bricking your phone: When you tamper too much with your phone, there is a small risk of bricking your device. In essence, a "bricked" phone is no better than carrying around a brick in your pocket. The phone is dead when it has been "bricked." If you do your research and pay attention to feedback from others, bricking should never occur.

Conclusion

If you are cautious, you won’t have any problem with a rooted device. However, the choice whether to root or not to root your Android Device is left to you. To some it just doesn’t worth the time and effort. For others, it’s just the best option. They want freedom, since rooting allows them to use their phones and tablets in a better way. To me, rooting is a great way to get the full Android experience.
